    Quick answer

Clean Downloads by grouping files by type and date, inspecting important items, separating exact duplicates from similar names, and moving keepers before deleting anything.

Do not delete every old file: age is a clue, not proof that a download is disposable.

    A careful cleanup workflow

    1. Make a backup or copy of anything important before a large cleanup.
    2. Group the folder by type and date so installers, documents, images, and archives are easier to scan.
    3. Open or inspect files you may still need. Check downloads related to active projects, taxes, travel, or software licenses.
    4. Create deliberate destinations for files you are keeping. Moving is easier to review than immediate deletion.
    5. Revisit the folder after a few days and remove only items you can identify with confidence.

    Handle duplicates separately

“report.pdf” and “report (1).pdf” might be identical, or they might not. Use a duplicate finder that compares content, then review each group before removing a copy. Visually similar photos with different resolutions may not be exact duplicates.

For repeatable rule-based moves, Auto Organize can propose destinations for review. It is not an automatic deletion engine.
