Duplicate Photo Finder
FolderManifest finds duplicate photos by comparing what is inside each file (SHA-256), not the filename or how the picture looks. Renamed copies are caught, different shots are never confused, and nothing is deleted until you approve it.

Photos are grouped by SHA-256 content hash. Two different shots of the same scene are never flagged as duplicates.
JPG, HEIC, PNG, RAW, and video. Renamed and moved copies are still caught because the name is ignored.
See every group, choose which copy to keep, and keep a report proving what the library contained.
"Duplicate photo" means two different things, and the tools that handle them work differently.
Exact duplicates are the same file stored more than once: a phone backup imported twice, a folder copied to an external drive and back, or an album shared by two people and merged. The bytes are identical, so a content hash proves it with no guesswork. This is what FolderManifest finds.
Similar photos are different files that look alike: burst shots, an edited version next to the original, a resized copy sent over chat. Finding those needs image analysis and a similarity threshold, and you should review every match because the tool is guessing. If that is your main problem, a similarity tool from the table below is the better fit.
Pick the Pictures folder, an external drive, or an exported phone backup. Subfolders are included.
FolderManifest computes a SHA-256 fingerprint for each photo locally. Identical fingerprints mean identical files.
Each group lists every copy with its folder, size, and date so you can decide which one is the original.
Only the copies you approve are removed, and you get a report of what was kept.

An honest look at the common options. Most are built for similar-photo cleanup; FolderManifest is built for exact matches you can prove.

It depends on which duplicates you have. If the same photo was copied into several folders, imported twice, or renamed (IMG_0421.jpg and holiday.jpg with identical bytes), an exact-match finder that compares file content is the safest choice because it never flags two different shots. If you want to catch burst shots, edits, or resized versions, you need a visual-similarity tool such as Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder, dupeGuru (picture mode), or Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro. FolderManifest is an exact-match finder.
Yes. The FolderManifest online duplicate checker is free with no account: add up to 10 photos (10 MB each) and it groups the identical ones by SHA-256. Files are processed in memory and discarded, never stored. For a whole photo library, the desktop app scans locally and is free for 7 days with no credit card.
Yes. Matching is done on a SHA-256 hash of the file content, not the name, date, or folder. A renamed or moved copy of the same image file lands in the same duplicate group.
No. It only groups byte-identical files. A photo that was resized, re-saved as a different JPEG quality, cropped, or edited has different bytes and is treated as a separate file. That is deliberate: exact matching can never suggest deleting a shot that is merely similar. Use a visual-similarity tool if near-duplicates are your main problem.
Yes. Because matching is by content hash, the file type does not matter. JPG, PNG, HEIC, CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG, MP4, and MOV duplicates are all detected the same way.
No. FolderManifest shows every duplicate group for review and nothing is removed until you approve the plan. You also keep a checksum report of what was in the library and what you kept.
Yes. The desktop app runs on Windows 10 and 11, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), and Linux. Everything runs on your computer; photos are not uploaded.
